Language as studied in linguistics, is composed of signifiers and signified, each word or sign, designating a graspable image to facilitate its understanding. One can argue that the words, distorted, deprived from their graspable image, abstract ; are leading to a new relationship with language, more mystical, freed from meaning. Glossolalia or speaking in tongues is a phenomenon in which people speak in languages lacking any readily understandable meaning, even believed to be a divine language in some religious practises. The project starts with a serie of recordings of people reading a poem in a language they do not know. Then transcribed and read by native speakers. This project investigates how a same text deprived from its “real” sonorities can create new sounds : signs not directly evoking things but rather triggering inner vibrations, more pure, more sincere, would lead to an experience of language -closer to a religious transe- than to its meaningful understanding. The project then evolved into a sound piece, materializing the particles of languages, lost in translation.
