Hommage to Isou. Experiencing a letter is like entering a world within a world. Letters are the visual symbols of our speech; the auditory representation of our thoughts, the ethereal blocks building our reality. Letterforms live in a universe nested within our own, affected by what affects their authors. But they are their own creations. Readers are pushed into multi-sensory experiences : the structurality of the language, the translation of an external sound, an inner vibration to the experience of language. The letter is a product of our collective selves, but also a product of an individual self. The performance revolves around the inner experience of a letter (here the letter a), where it’s repetition as a mantra leads the performer to the sincere experience of the letter, where the inner vibrations appear as a transe. The performer renounces the usage of words, but holds onto the poetic of sound, of letters. Letters become themselves, devoid of all semantic content.
